Sekibaku is the shibari style of Yagami Ryu.
It offers a distinct way of understanding, learning, and practicing shibari — one centered on exploring the erotic desire of both people equally: the person tying and the person being tied.
In Sekibaku, both partners stand on the same ground, with equal importance and value in the practice.
There are no fixed roles and no passive participants: both are active subjects. This calls for communication that is explicit and sincere — not metaphorical or taken for granted.
That demands personal honesty and self‑knowledge — essential ingredients for any experience that is truly healthy and satisfying.
Adaptation is everything. The person tying has to tune into the person being tied — their physical condition, state of mind, the moment, and the way the session unfolds.
We are looking for responses, not marching toward a predetermined destination. There is no fixed goal; instead, we flow and apply the right technique for whatever the moment requires.
Technically, Sekibaku is built on a set of foundational techniques or basics 「初級」 that combine to create a wide range of applications.
It does not rely on preset patterns or figures: each combination lets the practitioner build a shibari that is uniquely their own.
The katas or forms are study tools — ways to learn techniques or link several together — not rigid templates or mandatory sequences.
As a style, it keeps the focus on the people and their experience, not on how the rope looks or on visual effects.
At Gijón Shibari Dojo, we teach Sekibaku from a Western, scientific, and structured perspective, shaped by the #MSAFE method:
- Scientific: every technique is grounded in biomechanics, psychology, sexology, and neuroscience — ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
- Rational and analytical: it's not about memorizing figures but about understanding the foundations so you can apply them adaptively.
- Structured and personalized: each class adapts to the rhythm, needs, and goals of the students; no two sessions are the same.
Key Concepts of the Style
1. Foundations / Basics
Elementary techniques that, when combined, allow you to create multiple variations of shibari. They form the bedrock of learning and safe practice.
2. Katas / Forms
Sequences designed to study a specific technique or weave several together into a coherent whole. They are not rigid patterns, but tools for progressive learning.
3. Applications
Procedures that bring together foundations and katas, letting you apply technique in ways that adapt to each body and situation.
4. Focus
Guiding principles for practice: both participants always stand on equal ground, with shared responsibility and agency; physical and emotional safety come first; and technique bends to fit individual bodies, experiences, and goals.
5. Efficiency
Every technique and combination is taught so you can put it into practice safely from day one — weaving it into real erotic experience and genuine connection.
Sekibaku is more than technique: it is an intimate dialogue between partners, a process in which emotions and desires are explored consciously.
Each session opens up new layers of your own desire and your partner's — enriching your erotic life in ways you can feel.
The style's natural flow structures each session to build safety and trust, so any technique you learn can be applied from the very beginning with real results — no improvisation without basis, no unnecessary risk.
How We Teach at Shibari Dojo
At the dojo, we use the #MSAFE method, which adapts Sekibaku to a Western context by blending technical rigor with a scientific, structured, and safe approach.
We do not work with isolated fragments: Sekibaku is a defined style with clear forms, methods, and focus — and every class is personalized to match each student's interests, abilities, and experience.
The teaching is designed so you can put what you learn into practice immediately, weaving theory and action together step by step. In this way, each student develops their own shibari — unique and personal — within a framework that is safe and conscious.
Sekibaku, as we teach it, is a complete experience: technical, mindful, and erotic — grounded in knowledge, responsible practice, and genuine equality between everyone who takes part.
