Faceta artística de Hajime Kinoko

The name Hajime Kinoko is practically a household one, even beyond the shibari scene.

This 21st-century Japanese performer has become one of the most recognizable faces in the West, undoubtedly doing more than most to bring shibari into the mainstream spotlight.

His signature theme? Connection. He sums it up with his slogan “tying, not binding,” placing the intention behind the act front and center.

In Kinoko’s world, the act of tying can mean many things: it might be about restraint or captivity, or—his preference—about creating a bond that links rather than locks. By focusing on tying without restriction, Kinoko suggests that true connection—whether between people, objects, or the space and its audience—shouldn’t be about domination or control. Instead, it’s about harmonious, free-flowing coexistence.
