A detailed guide to creating a futumomo that’s safe, functional, stimulating, and fun.

Before You Begin

In this lesson, we’ll focus on how to apply the technique for a futumomo in hip extension.

This means we’re not going to follow a strict step-by-step tutorial. Instead, we’ll work with an exercise you can use as a foundation to build futumomos in extension, applying your own creativity and patterns.

First, a couple of tips: avoid parallel rope lines, and absolutely never pass the rope “through” the leg using a kanuki or safety wrap.

Parallel lines are not appreciated in Japanese aesthetics, and anatomically, they disrupt the natural muscular engagement—a spiral chain that starts at the glute and travels down toward the arch of the foot, zigzagging along the leg.

The same goes for kanukis or safety wraps in this shape. We’re not suspending here; we’re not lifting from the futumomo.

We’re aiming for stimulation and restriction. A rope running between the calf and thigh will interfere with the muscle activation needed to get the most out of this form.

The futumomo is a tie where you must tighten the ropes—firmly, but in a very specific way.

We tighten on the “muscle side,” meaning the thigh—especially the inner thigh—and we pass the rope more gently on the “bone side,” the shin.

A sensory nerve runs right along the shin. Its evolutionary job is to signal pain to protect the leg from fractures or injury. So putting pressure there guarantees pain.

Remember: pain shuts muscles down, and this shape only works when the musculature is highly active.

If you want to incorporate pain into play, this may not be the best tie.

To preserve its purpose and effectiveness, aim for pain via neurological response—not by crushing nerve endings. Pain is managed in the brain, not in the skin.

We don’t tighten for “sensation” or “stimulation” alone—we tighten to contain and support the large muscle groups we’re working with, helping to maintain anatomical restriction. More muscle means more pressure can be applied.

If you don’t tie with the proper level of pressure, that restriction will give way, and the tie will become ineffective at best, and potentially unsafe.

The direction you wrap the leg also matters.

Because we’re working in hip extension, wrapping from the inside outward is far more efficient. This movement helps shift the fascia in the direction that supports our goal.

Futumomo in Extension Exercise



Balance Position

To practice this form, we’ll start with the tied person sitting on the floor in a balanced position.

The person tying should sit to one side—this helps manage the body later—and of course, stay in their own balance, engaging their core to guide movement smoothly.

It’s the rigger’s responsibility to place the bottom’s body correctly.
If the tied person isn’t balanced, we need to help them get there.

In practice, you can do this through collaborative conversation—it helps both partners better understand their bodies.

In play, these corrections should be woven into the interaction so they feel natural, not like “adjustments.” Let them blend in.

Securing the Rope

For convenience, we’ll anchor the rope to the leg with a single column, placed about four fingers above the ankle.

Keep it loose—its only purpose is to hold the rope in place. A single wrap is perfectly fine. Then forget about it.

You can place this anchor before moving the body or once movement has begun—whichever flows better for your scene.

Creating Hip Extension

Here you’ll use the same techniques we covered for bringing an arm back in gote-style forms.

As above, so below: the hip joint, like the shoulder, is a ball-and-socket joint (the femur sitting in a cavity), with the advantage of being far more stable than the shoulder.

Before moving, visualize the motion.
If, as in the video, the tied person is sitting with legs forward, you’ll need to guide the leg in an arc from the point of contact toward the glute, following a radius determined by their anatomy—limb length and hip mobility.

For the rigger, positioning matters: your shoulder should allow that circular movement comfortably, without your body blocking the leg’s arc.

Using one arm or the other is not the same, and your initial spot may not be ideal for the next step. That’s okay—adjust and learn.

If you need to reposition, don’t just pick up where you left off—start over from the beginning.

Begin the circular motion slowly, following that arc, bringing the foot toward the glute. This ensures the movement comes from hip extension—not knee flexion.

Constantly check that the motion originates in the hip, not the knee or lower back.

Where the foot ends up depends on the person’s mobility, and often, the foot and glute will not touch.

This is perfectly fine—as long as the movement was done correctly and the glutes and hamstrings are engaged, because that intense muscular activation is exactly what we’re looking for.

Remember: hip extension rarely reaches 10 degrees. Many people don’t reach 3 degrees.

The number isn’t the goal. What matters is that the person reaches their limit, feeling the front-line stretch and the strong activation behind.

CRUCIAL: Once hip extension is established, be extremely cautious when moving the tied person so you don’t lose that extension—and the knee doesn’t drift in front of the hip.

It’s surprisingly easy to slip into a tiny flexion range without noticing.

Tip for riggers: Use one of your legs to block their hip extension—creating a physical stop so it doesn’t “bounce back.”

Wrapping the Thigh

Now we begin the actual tying.

Take the rope and pass it under the leg, wrapping around the thigh and applying firm pressure when it comes back to the front.

Target the inner thigh specifically, placing the first wrap as close to the groin as possible while still anchored in muscle—not directly in the groin.

Tip: Passing rope under the leg can be tricky because there’s no space between the leg and the floor. You can create that space by lifting the leg and resting it on the leg you were using as a block.

From here, the following wraps will compress the thigh moving toward the knee. Finish at a safe distance (10–15 cm), depending on the person’s anatomy.

We do not want rope over any knee structures—it can be uncomfortable or unsafe.

Once you leave the big muscular section of the thigh, the tie becomes less effective, and depending on anatomy, ropes near the knee may slip off, loosen, or cause discomfort or pain.

Always tighten on muscle, never on the shin.

Pressing into the inner thigh creates indirect stimulation, especially for bodies with internal genitals.

That moment of pressure is key during a session. It’s part of the “arousal arc”, boosting stimulation so you can then guide it into excitement.

So in practice, it makes little sense to wrap the entire thigh in one quick motion.
Savor the moment—each moment. Together.

If you’re aiming to optimize stimulation, avoid locks, knots, or anything that blocks rope mobility, and avoid parallel lines.

This improves muscle activation and maintains good body-and-rope tension.

To finish, a solid method is gathering all lines into a single point, increasing the tension of each line. The order matters:

Anchor the rope on the loosest line, then pull it toward the tightest one, repeating until all are drawn together.

Finish with a simple knot, a loop, or by tucking into a high-tension wrap.

If you have rope left, you can create a stirrup that supports the arch of the foot.

Not everyone loves this, but for many, foot stimulation is delightful—and biomechanically, it’s excellent.

Foot Stirrup

As an optional enhancement—for support, stimulation, and added muscle activation—you can add a stirrup to keep the foot in a flexed (“flat”) position.

Bring the rope to the arch of the foot, flex it with your hand, and hold it in place with the rope before returning to the structure, creating tension between body and rope.

This is not about wrapping the foot (also stimulating), but about holding it flat—amplifying the kinetic chain by allowing the bottom to “push against the stirrup.”

Note: If a calf cramp hits during a futumomo, changing the foot position can help. A flexed foot slightly lengthens the calves and eases tension in the hamstrings.

Tips for the Tied Person

You should feel no strain or pressure in the knee. Remember: the movement comes from hip extension, not knee flexion.

As the rope presses into your muscles, “push” your pelvis (from the pelvic bone) in the opposite direction of the rope’s pull.
This counter-action supports your hip extension, making it stronger.

If you don’t resist, your pelvis will naturally follow the rope’s direction, moving from extension to flexion—meaning the knee will drift ahead of the hip.

Tips for the Rigger

Make sure the shape is built with the tied person in balance.
The effectiveness of the technique depends heavily on their pelvic stability.

Tighten the tie. This form is safer, more comfortable, and more effective when properly tightened.
Remember: tighten on muscle, never on the shin.

It sounds obvious, but never lose rope tension—not even for a second.

Keep in mind this is a HIP EXTENSION. Use the knee–hip line as a reference: the knee should sit behind the hip.
