Now that we’ve covered the risks, let’s move on to how to prevent them.
The first step is to check whether the person can actively adopt the position on their own.
Can they do it? Great.
Only partially? That’s our starting point.
Not at all? No problem: we adapt the technique to their abilities. For example, using gote forms where the arms are extended or separated.
Heads up: positioning the arms forward isn’t a valid alternative. It’s a posture unrelated to the gote, lacking its dynamics and effects.
Muscle activation is critical and needs constant monitoring. Range of motion is directly tied to the ability to sustain that activation.
And it’s not just about the arms: the abdominal muscles, obliques, and back are also key. Muscle groups work together to support structured positions.
Plus, it’s vital to ensure joint stability. Rotated shoulders, an open chest, and flat scapulae are non-negotiable for the gote to serve its purpose.
We haven’t talked about the legs yet, but they can’t be ignored, especially in standing postures.
Poor balance or posture management can undo all your work if the legs aren’t properly integrated.
In standing positions, the legs need to provide a solid, stable base. On the floor, they shouldn’t get in the way or cause discomfort.
There’s a piece of advice that’s gained traction but doesn’t hold up: keeping the elbows “inside” the shoulder line.
The reasoning is that without proper shoulder rotation or flat scapulae, the elbows tend to stick out.
But even with elbows “in,” incorrect compensations can still happen. So, it’s not a reliable indicator.
That said, when elbows are clearly outside the shoulder line, the risk of impacting sensitive areas increases.
Vertebral folds aren’t just a warning sign—they mean something is going very wrong.
The spine is made up of vertebrae, some more mobile than others. Optimal movement distributes effort across multiple vertebrae, spreading the load.
When the strain focuses on just two vertebrae, you get what’s called a fold: disc compression, nerve or vascular pinching… definitely not ideal.
This often happens when raising the shoulders or arching the lower back to “pop the butt out.”
The gote isn’t a static pose: it’s designed for movement. That’s why understanding the vectors of motion for each variant is crucial.
Most gote forms operate on the horizontal plane: forward, backward, or side to side.
Some—more complex ones—incorporate movement in the vertical plane.
Knowing the technique and its purpose is essential.
You could try crossing a country in a sports car… or a bulldozer. Only one’s efficient. Want to demolish a building? Bulldozer, yes; sports car, no.
Same principle here.
Note: movements in the gote should always be circular.
You don’t push straight forward—you create circular traction (demonstrate visually if possible).
In vertical movements, the rope—running through the anchor point and back—contributes to that circular path.
To wrap up the safety section: the person being tied shouldn’t grip their forearms.
That creates excessive tension in the area, disrupts muscle activation, and throws off body balance, reducing the figure’s effectiveness.
Aesthetically, in Japan, there’s appreciation for what’s called weeping hands: when the hands hang down like willow branches or wisteria blossoms.
逆手枝垂後手 (sakate shidare gote): hands behind, dangling like branches.
Functionally, though, this poses a risk: dangling hands signal zero activation in the forearms.
Tension should start from the pinky, acting as a rudder or pointer, traveling up the arm, across the body, engaging the core, and through the glutes, down the legs to the ground… then looping back along that same path to drive the ropes.
