Structure and Function of Gote-Style Forms

Now, let’s break down the step-by-step construction process, focusing on the purpose behind each stage and how to apply the technique to achieve the intended result. We’ll also highlight common mistakes, potential pitfalls, and the risks associated with poor execution.

The Purpose of the Gote
Despite the popular image of prisoners tied this way, the Gote isn’t really a restraint.
In fact, during a class, Yagami Ren once showed me how to escape this tie.
Spoiler: It involves dislocating your own shoulder, letting the ropes fall away, and then popping the humerus back in. Don’t try this at home—or anywhere else.
The Gote’s main function is to support anatomical restriction.
Think of it like athletic tape or a weightlifting belt—tools that help your body manage effort.
But here’s the thing: it’s not about locking someone up or protecting them—it’s more of a gentle nudge, a bit of support.
For the tie to work as intended, you need a solid biomechanical foundation.
The core goal of any Gote, from the simplest to the most complex, is to create a “box”—a stable unit in the body that helps manage and distribute force.
I use the word “box” intentionally—it’s common in English (box tie) and works as a metaphor. The idea is to treat the torso (not the whole body) as a single, cohesive unit.
If you’ve practiced Tai Chi or Qigong, you might be familiar with the concept of “moving clouds.” That’s another good metaphor.
But neither a rigid, heavy “box” nor light, airy “clouds” fully capture the human body, which is naturally jointed, mobile, and varied—bones are denser than muscles, muscles more flexible, the abdomen softer than the sternum, and so on.
So, we need to work with the body’s natural structure and mechanics to create a stable block that allows movement but supports specific forces. You see this in calisthenics and acrobatics.
Since adaptability is key in our approach, the type of Gote and the techniques we use depend on the movements and forces we’re working with. If we’re being cautious, we’ll build in a healthy safety margin.
Different shibari schools each have their own Gote variations. Unfortunately, many don’t start with the body—they borrow techniques from other fields: some from tying bundles of fabric, others from handling rigid objects like bricks. Martial arts-inspired styles often end up causing dislocations or injuries.
Anatomical Restriction
We start by creating a solid anatomical restriction in the torso—stabilizing the shoulder joints on both sides.
We’ve covered this technique before, so by now, you should have the basics down.

Muscle activation should include both the muscles around the shoulder joints (chest and back)—some stabilizing, others contracting—as well as the lines running through the core (abdomen and back). Don’t neglect the glutes as pelvic stabilizers and the leg muscles to channel energy from the ground.
This activation should match the demands of each moment and step.
The person being tied should adjust their effort, avoiding unnecessary tension to save energy for when it’s actually needed.
Physical fitness and endurance set the limit for how long you can hold this (or any) position. Even highly trained athletes can rarely sustain full-body activation for more than two or three minutes.
Ask yourself: with your current fitness level, can you hold activation for that long?
Think about how long it takes to tie a standard takate. If you’re fully activated the whole time, you’ll probably burn out before you even get to suspension.
That’s why the person being tied needs to pace themselves, ramping up or down as needed. Later in this and other lessons, we’ll break down the demands of each phase and share tips to optimize energy use.
Compensations
Compensations in the body of the person being tied are one of the biggest challenges in these forms.
It’s important to work together to spot and correct them.
Key areas to watch:
Shoulder blades: Should be flat against the body and angled toward the spine.
Ribs: Shouldn’t stick out past the pelvis.
Elbows: Bent elbows often mean arm muscles are disengaged.
Hands: Limp or gripping hands signal a weak kinetic chain.
Knees: Locked knees, or knees turned in or out (especially in).
Neck and lower back: Excessive curvature.
Try this: Imagine pouring water over the head of someone in a Gote and watching it flow to the ground.
If anything sticks out or creates a sharp angle, the water will splash away.
If everything is aligned, it flows smoothly down to the floor.
Parts of the Tie
We’ll focus here on Gote forms in the “Akechi” style, inspired by the techniques of this tier—think Nawashi Akechi Kana, Osada Steve, Hajime Kinoko, or Yagami Ren.
These differ from forms used in schools like Yukimura or Naka, which rely on counter-tensions, among other distinctions.
Cuffs
Often called cuffs in English, but here we’ll use the Spanish term “grilletes.”
These are the ties that secure the forearms and anchor the rope to start the structure.
They can be a single cuff binding both arms or one for each arm if they don’t cross behind the back.
Let’s avoid calling them single column ties, as that’s a specific technique, and their use here is more advanced, involving additional concepts.
Also, steer clear of tying them around the wrists—it’s not safe.
Personally, since this is the start of the tie and I usually add more support later, I use just one wrap of rope.
Whether you go with one, two, or more wraps depends on the final form you’re aiming for—there’s no strict rule here.
My tip: If it’s the start of the tie and you’ll reinforce it later, stick with one wrap. It makes things easier for the tier.

Stem or Trunk
This is a plant metaphor: the rope line running down the center of the tie, along the spine, which can be long or barely there.
From it, other rope lines branch out like a tree’s limbs.
It’s not a load-bearing pillar but more of a guide, a reference point, or a pivot.
It doesn’t carry weight—it distributes it.
To stick with the plant analogy, it’s like the stake that guides a tree’s growth direction.
Lines or Ropes
We often call lines “ropes,” so terms like “takate with 2 or 3 ropes” are standard in shibari lingo.
These refer to each structural “piece” of the tie, each with its own distinct role, regardless of how many wraps or ropes are used. They’re applied in sequence, so we number them.
First Line
The foundation of the Gote, it supports the forearms, creating a kinetic chain between the sacroiliac and sternoclavicular joints.
Second Line
This line, on the other hand, throws off the balance, making the structure feel heavier toward the ground, prompting a stronger upward response from the person being tied.
If you’re not connecting the tie to an upward lifeline, you can skip it.
Third Line or Tasuki
We’ve studied this before as the tasuki.
Its purpose is to add stability and support to the tie while boosting muscle activation in the person being tied.
It can act as a simple “back brace” or even stand alone without the second line, but it shines in suspensions with transitions.
We’ll dig into that later in the course—let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Knots, Frictions, Locks, and Closures
Knots
We’ll use one simple, straightforward knot to close the initial cuff, and that’s it.
To finish the tie, another simple knot works if it’s convenient, but if the tensions are right, you can just weave the rope between two taut lines.
If you’re planning acrobatics or hanging from the Gote, it’s wise to close with a simple knot and secure it to handle expected movements.
Frictions
We won’t use frictions in the traditional sense, but we’ll leverage the rope’s braiding and direction to resist movement and “freeze time” without disrupting flow or tension.
Locks, Brakes, or Kanukis
Forget everything you’ve heard or imagined about kanukis.
They’re not there to stop the rope from sliding upward and slipping off the body—that’s handled by managing tension in the rope and body.
Misusing them is a common cause of injury, whether in their construction or application. I’m calling out the traditional kanuki style taught by Osada Steve’s school here.
Their real role is fine-tuning rope tension and ramping up muscle activation. They’re a final tweak before starting a demanding movement or effort.
In simple structures not meant for acrobatics or rough play, they’re unnecessary and can even backfire.
Closures
These are the locks or closures forming the “core” of the structure, distributing forces and energy.
In Yagami Ryu, they’re known for their intricate design, wrapping each rope individually, while Kinoko uses a double X-shaped cross.
They only make sense when using two or more lines in the Gote.
